One of my biggest footwear regrets is letting go of my original Alvin Purples bought from Laced at the launch event. It’s cost me an arm and a leg, but I’ve put this regret to bed by doubling up on the re-releases….not quite the same as the re-releases are missing the R rating logo from the heal, but I can live with this small difference, just to be able to rock theses beauties again.

It took me a while, but I eventually managed to pick up a pair of the excellent BAIT Gel Saga Phantom Lagoons. I’ve probably said it before, but anything aqua or purple always grabs my attention but if they are both included on a classic silhouette, I’m sold. Whilst this release was limited, it was produced in enough numbers to ensure that there are plenty about on the reseller market and the prices aren’t that high….if you get the chance I would recommend picking a pair up….I certainly would consider a double up if the chance comes my way.

Having done a couple of all suede New Balance custom 574’s, I wanted to check out what the leather option was like. I also have a couple of saved designs with purple heavy colour blocking and wanted to check out how vivid it was in real life. This design helped me out with both questions…..the leather is good quality, and the purple is nice and vivid.
I am however, a little disappointed with the quality of this pair. The leather is badly bunched up around the toe box (especially on the left shoe). There are a couple of ‘over glue’ stains around the shoe as well…the faults are a little annoying, but not enough to send the shoes back.
When the Adidas AZX series dropped way back in 2008, the whole range was positively received, with certain shoes becoming instant hype magnets. There were, however a couple that seemed to pass relatively under the radar…this ‘Kendo’ ZX800 being one of them. Designed by the proprietors of the now sadly defunct Kendo in LA, the shoe features lush grey and purple suede and gold /// just to set the shoe off….a massively underrated collaboration in my eyes.
You really can’t deny that Woody, Hans and the rest of the guys over at SF headquarters really do have a knack for applying eye catching designs to classic silhouettes. I’ve not seen people getting this whipped up about a release for a while now. The latest New Balance and Sneaker Freaker collaboration is applied to the classic 998 model and is dubbed the ‘Tassie Devils’. The Australian release happened last week and sold out immediately, meaning that the hype train for the European release on the 30th has well and truly left the station, is steaming towards a small number of retailers and is due to hit on the 30th of this month.
Quite possibly my favourite ever US made New Balance. The shape is phenomenal and the materials are lush to say the least.
